After pressing the Digitize button, the takeoff window will appear, overlayed by a dialog box with instructions.
Press OK to continue. Then use the takeoff window to measure a known distance.
After clicking on the end of the line a dialog box will appear.
Enter the length of the known distance. For english measurements, a fraction calculator is presented to convert inches to decimal portions of a foot.
When the distance is correct, press the OK button.
Pressing the Cancel 
button will stop the scale process and return to Excel with the scale unchanged.
