PDF takeoff replaced printed-plan takeoff over the last 15 years as drawings transitioned to digital delivery. The estimator opens the PDF, calibrates it to the drawing scale (snap to a known dimension), then uses measurement tools to capture lengths, areas, and counts directly from the on-screen drawing.
PDF takeoff tools fall into two categories: stand-alone takeoff applications (the PDF is the canvas, measurements export to a spreadsheet) and Excel-integrated takeoff (the measurement lands directly in the estimating workbook as a cell). The Excel-integrated approach skips the export step and keeps the workflow inside the bid template estimators already use.
BidScreen XL is the Excel-integrated category. The measurement-as-Excel-cell pattern removes double-entry errors and makes plan revisions a one-click re-measure rather than a redo-the-spreadsheet exercise.
